La Gruyère
Walking in the snow

The plains surrounding the Prealpes, where the town of Gruyère is located, are surrounded by magnificent mountainous landscapes with peaks reaching over 2000m.

The Moléson, which literally means "mountain which can be seen from far away" has been a reference point for travellers for centuries, and proudly stands up in front of the Preaples. On a clear day you can admire the panorama from its summit with breathtaking views over the Swiss and French Alps, Lake Geneva and the Jura.

Summer is a great time to go for day hikes of all different levels, both on the plains and in the mountains.

In winter the snow covers the mountain with a thick white layer, all the way down the plains. A lot of activities are on offer such as cross country, snow shoes or skiing.

Cow

Lake Gruyère which is situated between the mountains and the plains, is a privileged destination for hiking and swimming, or just to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounding scenery.

Tradition plays a major part of every day life in Gruyère. Due to centuries of experience and "savoir-faire", the infamous Gruyère cheese is nowadays being exported and consumed worldwide. However, the cheese maintains a particular and unique taste in the region, where it is produced locally.

As you will see, the cows are an integral part of the landscape. They spend their days grazing happily in the fields, and you might even be woken up by their bells! The tradition of Alpée or La Poya as they call it in their local dialect, that time in spring when the cows ascent to their mountain pasture, and Désalpe or La Ryndià, when they descent in autumn, are important traditional events and mark the seasons.

During Désalpe the cows are decorated and parade in long processions. Then it is time for the locals to celebrate La Bénichon, popular for its tasty and hearty menu that is challenging the appetites of many!

Gruyère's Castle

The history of Gruyère also impregnates our panorama. Many castles and towers from medieval times are found in the region.

It’s worth visiting the Castle and Old Town of Gruyère; it will take you back to the time where Gruyère was the strategic point between the Duke of Savoie and the Habsbourg Empire.
